Issue (02) — En conversation with Jasmin Voss
A monthly interview series with talented entrepreneurs about their creative process and what keeps them inspired.
I came across Jasmin’s work as I was browsing illustrations for my own brand last Summer — and INSTANTLY fell in love with her aesthetic/ creative vision. Growing up in the South of France, Mediterranean lifestyle (&) nostalgia is a subject I’ve always been deeply fascinated with, and seeing the way she captures it in her artworks fills me with joy; so it only made sense to invite her into this interview series. Hope you enjoy it!
Can you introduce yourself?
Hi I'm Jasmin, a designer and illustrator based in the south of Germany. I can't remember a time in my life when I wasn't painting or interested in colours, shapes and art in general.
Being an artist or being able to create every day has always been a dream for me. I then decided to study communication design although I never really wanted to work in an agency; my focus has always been on illustration, typography and photography.
(2) What is your contribution to the world and to the lives of others?
I started Casa Ocra as a home for my creativity and my own aesthetics, so to speak. My love for Italy and the Mediterranean way of life in general have been with me since my childhood. The colours, shapes, nature and history inspire me every time I travel.
I want to reflect these feelings in my illustrations and hope that others can recognize it. I want to convey a serene feeling, inspire daydreaming and take others into this world.
(3) What is currently inspiring you and influencing your worldview? What’s your creative process?
As I mentioned before, Mediterranean places inspire me the most. But no matter where I am, I try to soak up every detail like a sponge. I love to document colors and shapes and have countless photos of old house walls, doors and shutters with patina —and of course plants.
I also love looking at old dishes and fabrics, I think I'm generally always looking for unexpected colour combinations. What also excites me is capturing the essence of an object. Defining that and putting it on paper drives me, whether it's with a simple brush stroke or oil paint.
(4) Can you share a brand you couldn't live without?
Not an easy question, as there are actually many brands whose products or storytelling I think are wonderful.
But since I'm currently a lot into interior design, I'd say deVOL Kitchens. Their attention to detail and craftsmanship is impressive and the imperfect beauty of their objects is stunning.
